1960 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato Recreation

We first spotted this 1960 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato recreation on www.Build-Threads.com after they ran across it’s for-sale feature on E-bay. The selling dealer, Collector Cars of Houston has quite the lofty narrative surrounding it’s sale to go along with their staggering asking price of $2.4 million. That is a huge lump sum of cash to drop on anything, particularly an E-bay auction of a resto-mod powered by an early DB-7 supercharged inline 6 from Aston Martin’s dark years. After all, that motor was produced during a period of time before Ford’s involvement to help their resurgence back as an exotic car manufacturer of significance once again. Without them, there would most likely never have been the glorious 6 liter V12 that was first seen gracing the DB7 Vantage in 2000.

Although their asking price is still quite a bit less than the average $6.7 million selling price of a genuine DB4GT Zagato that Hagerty places on them (linked at the bottom of this page), we are finding it hard to believe anybody will really hit the “Buy it Now” button. Crazier things have happened, but the real question has got to be is it really worth that much? Let’s take a closer look and you be the judge..

Coach builder Clive Smart’s craftsmanship of the car’s body work is absolutely gorgeous. He uses the true old school technique of hand forming aluminum sheet metal around wooden bucks to re-create the Zagato’s beautiful original shape in his Newport Pagnell shop.

If a modern engine was an absolute must, perhaps a later V12 Vantage or Vanquish power plant would have been a better choice for use of it’s 420 naturally aspirated horsepower, not to mention far better soundtrack. The music they produce is absolutely God-like. The inline 6, not so much…

We would much rather have seen this car finished as an exact replica of the vintage Zagato with a period correct motor, as so many of it’s other features are so spot-on to the original’s.
22
All of the replica Ferrari’s that we have seen sell for big numbers have always been exact replicas of historic models, powered by period correct engines from donor Ferrari’s. We don’t remember any vintage Ferrari or Aston Martin replicas selling for 7 figures in resto-mod guise before, but please correct us if we are wrong.

The modern navigation screen in the dash is where we will bow out, pay our respects and appreciate the hard work and expert craftsmanship that went into this car’s build, which is ultimately the reason why we included it here in the first place.

Whatever your own personal tastes, nobody would argue that this Aston Martin was recreated by some very talented artists that are at the top of their game. Before showing up on E-bay, we wonder if it had the opportunity to hit any of the fine auction houses during Monterey week two months ago.

We have included a copy of the text and a link to this car’s for sale ad from E-bay at the bottom of the page. It will expire soon, so enjoy the pictures that we have saved here and feel free to share your own personal opinions of it, too in the “Comments” section below.

WHEN THE SULTAN OF BRUNEI AND HIS BROTHER PRINCE JEFFRI WERE BUYING ANY AND
EVERYTHING THEY WANTED, THEIR AUTOMOTIVE COLLECTION WAS GROUPING TOGETHER
THE BEST CARS FROM EVERY PERFORMANCE BRAND. THIS INCLUDED SEVERAL CUSTOM BUILT
ASTON MARTINS INCLUDING A VANTAGE SPECIAL SERIES I. TAKING ALMOST ALL OF IT’S
CUES FROM THE CLASSIC DB4 ZAGATO, THESE MODERN INTERPRETATIONS WERE SKETCHED
OUT SPECIFICALLY FOR THE SULTAN MIMICKING THE 1961 RACE CAR WHICH WAS SENT TO
TURIN AND BODIED BY SPECIALIST COACHBUILDER ZAGATO. OF THE ORIGINAL 19 BUILT,

WE, THE PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THIS PROJECT, STARTED OUT TRYING TO FORM A MORE PERFECT
UNION BY COMBINING THE PAST WITH THE PRESENT (AS DID THE SULTAN OF BRUNEI). IT
WAS A SIMPLE, YET AMBITIOUS PREMISE. TAKE THE ELEGANCE AND TIMELESS STYLING OF A
1960 ASTON MARTIN DB4GT ZAGATO, MERGE IT WITH THE POWER & ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY
OF A PRESENT DAY ASTON THUS CREATING THE ABSOLUTE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS. THIS CAR
WOULD HAVE THE LOOK OF ONE OF THE RAREST & HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER CARS IN THE WORLD
ALONG WITH THE DRIVABILITY OF SOME OF THE TOP RATED SPORTS CARS AVAILABLE TODAY.

PLANNING WAS METICULOUS AND THOROUGH. FIRST, WE HAD TO BUILD A COMPLETE NEW
ALUMINUM BODY, INCLUDING THE ZAGATO COACHWORK. THE FRAME WAS SENT TO WORLD
RENOWNED COACHBUILDER, CLIVE SMART, AT THE SHAPECRAFT FACILITY IN NEWPORT PAGNELL,
ENGLAND. THERE, THE ASTON BODY WAS METICULOUSLY CRAFTED OUT OF NOTHING MORE THAN
PREMIUM ALUMINUM AND THE SKILL OF THE ARTIST’S HANDS MANIPULATING THEIR ENGLISH
WHEELS. STATESIDE, PLANS WERE ENGINEERED TO ACCOMMODATE A SUPERCHARGED DB7 WITH
A 5 SPEED GETRAG TRANSMISSION FROM AN ALFRED DUNHILL EDITION. THEN ANOTHER SLOW
BOAT BACK TO THE U.S.A. WHERE ASSEMBLY OF THE ENGINE, ELECTRONICS, UPHOLSTERY,
EXHAUST, SUSPENSION, ETC. BEGAN. WHEN IT WAS ALL COMPLETE AND THE LAST LITTLE
BIT OF PERFECTION HAD BEEN LAVISHED ON IT – WE DECIDED TO MARKET THE CAR.

THAT IN AND OF ITSELF WAS NOT EASY AS, AFTER ALL, WE HAD CREATED THIS CAR OUT OF NOTHING.
HOWEVER, AS UNCOMFORTABLE A NOTION AS SELLING MAY HAVE BEEN, IT WAS NOTHING COMPARED
TO WHAT WAS JUST AROUND THE CORNER. AFTER WE UNVEILED OUR CREATION THROUGH SEVERAL
WEBSITES AND eBAY, WE WERE BLINDSIDED BY SOMETHING TOTALLY UNEXPECTED. SOMEONE FROM
HALFWAY AROUND THE WORLD WAS CLAIMING TO HAVE ANOTHER ASTON WITH OUR SAME V.I.N.
PLATE. WE WERE DUMBFOUNDED AND DEVASTATED AS WE HAD NEARLY 40 YEARS OF TITLE AND
OWNERSHIP HISTORY. WE HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO CEASE MARKETING UNTIL WE COULD UNRAVEL
THE TRUTH. TO THIS DAY WE HAVE NEVER SEEN A SINGLE PICTURE OF THIS “OTHER” CAR OR ONE
SHRED OF EVIDENCE THAT OURS IS NOT THE GENUINE ARTICLE. BUT IN THE INTERESTS OF
FAIRNESS TO A POTENTIAL BUYER, REPUTATIONS, EXORBITANT INTERNATIONAL LITIGATION
COST AND WHO KNOWS HOW MUCH LOST TIME, WE FELT THE ETHICAL & LOGICAL THING TO
DO WAS REVEAL THE FACTS OF WHAT WE KNEW. WITH MUCH ANGUISH WE SECURED AN
UNENCUMBERED TITLE WITH A NEW V.I.N. PLATE ISSUED BY THE STATE OF TEXAS.

SINCE THAT TIME WE HAVE LEARNED THAT RECORD KEEPING IN THOSE EARLY DAYS AT
ASTON WAS NOT EFFICIENT AND DUPLICATE V.I.N. PLATES WERE NOT UNHEARD OF.
WE BELIEVE THIS CAR TO BE THE GENUINE ARTICLE,
BUT WE KNOW
IT IS 100% ASTON MARTIN.

CUSTOM ARIAS PISTONS, BRAND NEW BORRANI WHEELS.

TEC GT ENGINE MANAGEMENT
SYSTEM WITH UNLIMITED PROGRAMMING.
EATON SUPERCHARGER WAS COMPLETELY REBUILT BY MARSTON AEROSPACE & JET COATED.
SUPERCHARGER HAS UNDERSIZED PULLEY FOR INCREASED PERFORMANCE.
AS SOME EXAMPLES THE RING SET ALONE FOR THE PISTONS WERE $2300.

WATER PUMP $2400. $4200. FOR A NEW CLUTCH KIT AND DISC.
FOUR WHEEL DISC BRAKES.
AP RACING FRONT AND DBS REAR.
DBS CONTROL ARMS THROUGHOUT.
CUSTOM STAINLESS EXHAUST.
RACK AND PINION STEERING.

THE INTERIOR HAS THE FINEST MATCHED HIDES
WHICH ARE CUSTOM STITCHED AND EMBROIDERED.

AIR-CONDITIONING.
NAVIGATION SYSTEM. PIONEER HEAD UNIT.
2X DIAMOND AUDIO AMPS 650 WATTS @4 OHMS.
DIAMOND AUDIO SPEAKERS & SUBWOOFER.

ESPITE ALL THAT HAS HAPPENED, WE CONTINUE OUR QUEST FOR PROVENANCE.

GETTING THIS CAR FROM WHERE IT STARTED TO WHERE IT SITS TODAY WAS A JOURNEY OF EPIC
SCALE. IT BEGAN WITH NOTHING MORE THAN THE FRAME AND TITLE TO A 1960 ASTON MARTIN DB4GT
AND A LOFTY IDEA TO BRING IT BACK TO LIFE. IT SPANNED 8 YEARS, 2 CONTINENTS, COUNTLESS
ARTISANS AND OVER 1 MILLION DOLLARS. THE RESULTS OF ALL THAT TIME, TALENT AND MONEY ARE
DOCUMENTED HERE FOR EVERYONE TO SEE. BUT IN THE END,THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE PERSON AS
RARE AND UNIQUE AS THIS CAR ITSELF THAT WILL HAVE THE PRIVILEGE TO OWN IT.
WE ARE PROUD TO BRING IT TO THE PUBLIC FOR IT’S DEBUT – AGAIN!

  1. Can you provide db4 zagato parts?

Paying 7 figures for a replica DB4GT Zagato will be the smartest idea a person will make (BIG SARCASM). I would have given the Chinese a chance to replicate the car. The front hood needs improvement, inline-6 engine needs to be of the same period and rear wheel gap will look so much closer than this one tried. Most importantly paying 7 figures for an unsanctioned reproduction is definitely and most absolutely the smartest idea a person will make (VERY BIG SARCASM).

  3. How can I reach Mr Clive Smart? In his website I couldn’t find the email or other contacts.
    Thank you,
