1984 Toyota Celica Turbo Rally Car Restoration

This 1984 Toyota Celica Turbo TC35 Rally Car was the subject of a restoration by Mäkelä Auto Tuning in Finland. It’s shop owner is retired rally driver Kari Mäkelä, who you may remember from our previous feature of their absolutely jaw dropping 1983 Ferrari 308 Michelotto Group B rally car replica build, which can be found in “Related posts” on the following page. Back to the subject at hand, this particular 2 wheel drive, 1.8 liter 4 cylinder turbo (4T-GTE) Group B rally car’s revival journey began by getting completely gutted before being fully rebuilt from the ground up. The shop’s crew custom fabricated an impressive amount of the vehicle back into it’s original Group B configuration, and knowing MAT, possibly even a few giant leaps beyond…

Toyota’s racing program built the Celica Twincam Turbo TA 64 Rally Cars from between 1983 to 1986. They had approximately 290 horsepower when first released, then got up to as much as 390 in their latest configuration.

Toyota’s little foray into the World Rally Championship battle ended up earning their cars the nickname of “King of Africa” because of their stronghold of Safari and Ivory Coast rallies, despite being only rear wheel drive.

This particular car is said to have been the actual Toyota Team Middle East Championship-winning car, driven by Mohammed Bin Sulayem between 1986 and 1988.

There is no mention of what specification this one was rebuilt to, but judging from Mäkelä Auto Tuning’s previous builds we are going to take a wild stab here and guess that they took the opportunity to rebuild it to the latest high horsepower configuration.

Not even the slightest tidbit was overlooked in this restoration, which even included hand painting the gauge faces and forming it’s aluminum panels into shape by hand.

After it was finally finished, it ended up being shipped back to the Middle East where it was shown at the 2009 Dubai Motor Show by it’s owner, former driver Mohammed Bin Sulayem.

We get a bit emotional and teary eyed at reunions, so this is where we will end this feature before we embarrass ourselves. Be sure to take a look at the following video that we ran across of this Celica’s actual build here at:

For a little bit of additional weekend entertainment, how about another video about yesteryear’s Toyota Group B rally days:
