This 1977 Mercedes Benz 450SEL 6.9 is the subject of a restoration thread on www.mbca.org by “Joe Brasileiro“. His name and impressive work were immediately recognizable, so a quick search confirmed that it was the same person as “jbrasile” who had restored the 1970 Mercedes Benz 300 SEL 6.3 that we previously featured. After all, how many Joe’s could there be restoring vintage Mercedes in Brazil? We gave high accolades to his craftsmanship on the last 6.3, and this latest 6.9 project is no different. Porsche is back once again with yet another interesting short video about another test mule/prototype/concept car that they have nestled away in their factory warehouse. This time they take a look at a slippery 911 with a drag coefficient of 0.27 (down from 0.40) that their engineers and designers created in 1984 as a study on aerodynamics that could be used in future designs:
Porsche is back again with another video featuring one more gem plucked from their private warehouse facility. This time around it is a short story about the original Boxster prototype that is disguised as a Turbo Body 964 Targa with it’s rear window tinted so you can’t see it’s mid engine hiding behind the front seats. Somehow, we don’t think these rough test mules get displayed at Porsche’s museum just up the street from them, so it is a treat to get a chance of hearing their interesting stories in what would otherwise be a car tucked away in obscurity unable to tell it’s tale about it’s part in automotive history. This 2002 Porsche 996 GT2 “RSR” is the subject of an on-going, 4 year active project by 911Design in an effort to build one of the most extreme street/track 911 GT2’s, possibly of all time. The custom fabrication craftsmanship and attention to detail in the suspension, engine and brakes, and all of it’s associated hardware is just absolute art. No posing here. In it’s final iteration, the 3.8 Twin Turbo engine was dynoed at 843 rwhp at 1.1 bar while running 100 octane race fuel.

After Porsche developed the 959, they toyed with the idea of making a more affordable version of the super car using it’s all wheel drive technology and a water cooled V8 sourced from Audi. As we all know, Porsche has not diverted from 6 cylinders in the 911 series since the 912 4 cylinder, but has since offered AWD beginning with the 964 series. In this short video, /DRIVEN takes a look at Achim Anscheidt’s 1981 Porsche SC. As the Head of Design for Bugatti, it is interesting to see his minimalist build, surely a sharp contrast to the luxurious power barges that consume his daily job duties. His 911 has been backdated to an early long hood car specification and was made extremely lightweight from use of Kevlar fenders, door skins and front and rear lids, as well as from gutting the interior, too. It’s beautifully simplistic yet effective build is exactly the kind that we like to feature here, and somehow we are sure that you’ll agree that this one was finished properly:

It’s always entertaining to take a look back at the way things used to be done in the automotive business with a gander at yesteryear’s sales literature and brochure photos. Although we still have magazine advertising and car brochures today, we don’t rely on them any longer for a definitive source of information since the invent of the internet, of course. The question really is, how much longer will these ancient relics continue being printed? Even when they are all finally extinct, we will still have the internet to view them on…
This 1955 Mercedes Benz 300 SL Gullwing was the subject of a full restoration by Rare Drive in East Kingston, New Hampshire. Although 300 SL’s are their specialty, they have also won awards on the lawns of Pebble Beach and Amelia Island for their restorations of Ferraris, Ford GT40s and Shelby Cobras too. Their website does not include any details of this specific vehicle, but since the car is such a classic we have included it here along with a bit of history on the model. Our interest has been piqued especially since featuring the 2nd SL ever produced in a previous story that can be seen here: http://www.carbuildindex.com/7856/1952-mercedes-benz-300-sl-restoration-by-factory-2nd-every-produced-2/.
By the time this road-going 300 SL was produced 3 years after the previously mentioned ’52, they had proved to be a force to be reckoned with at the track and on the showroom floors, and this particular example finally received a much needed restoration to bring it back to it’s former glory.
