The following video on the next page chronicles the complete rebuild of a 1968 Ford Escort Mk 1 in the style of the vintage Rothmans cars, although it’s livery is hopefully intentionally misspelled as “Rotmanns”. Not only does the inspirational film show the car being taken from a basket case to a very capable vintage stage racer, it also shows some epic in-car action shots during several competitions from when it’s finished. Now, if this doesn’t entice you to work on your own car this 4th of July weekend, maybe it’s time to pick another project car that will motivate you more. Say, an Escort Mk 1, perhaps? Stunning 1967 OSI 20m Restoration

This 1967 OSI 20m TS Coupe was the year-and-a-half long project of “Nathan R”, who refers to it as one of the most difficult restorations that he has ever taken on. The rust was extensive, covering about half of the car and requiring the old world craftsmen at his shop in Vietnam shop to hand form new panels for practically half of the vehicle, but that didn’t stop them as it would others who have been defeated by less. In addition, during the process of restoring the car, Nathan found that the OSI classic car community could benefit from his company reproducing quality parts that would otherwise be unobtainable, such as grills, headlight pods, window rubbers and rear light surrounds, which they now offer for sale. With only around 200 of these rare Italian/German/American hybrids survivors left remaining today out of the 2000+ originally built, it’s great to see that the hobby can perpetually benefit from one man’s quest to restore his own example to the highest standard possible.

Survivor: 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona NASCAR

The subject of today’s Survivor feature is this slick red 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona, which is said to have been the first NASCAR Grand National vehicle to post a 200 + mph race lap. It has remained in incredibly original condition, all of the way down to it still wearing the same vintage slick tires that it had last worn while competing for it’s final time. Now coated with a silicon sealant on their insides, they are certainly period correct for show purposes, but obviously not a safe or sticky tire any longer for any manner of spirited driving, whatsoever. What really impressed me the most about this vintage racer is the fact that it was “not restored, but thoroughly cleaned, detailed and all mechanical components checked. It is just as it was last raced in 1970”, as per Bruce Canepa’s site where it is listed for an undisclosed sum. A true time capsule. Let’s take a closer look, shall we?…

CSX2000: The Very First Shelby Cobra Ever Produced

This innocuous appearing blue AC set before you just so happens to be one of, if not the most significant sports cars in automotive history to ever grace an American powerplant. You see, this vehicle is CSX2000, the very first Shelby Cobra to ever be produced. But you already knew that there was something special about this car, didn’t you? Upon first glance at it’s photos, the automotive connoisseur in you already immediately noted it’s well earned patina, ruling out the possibility of it being a later produced replica, especially when you consider that the majority of replicas wear wider flared bodies. This one’s narrow body, early unfamiliar looking vintage badges and all original looking interior were all tell tale signs that this was possibly an exceptionally iconic car that you are looking at, but would you have known that this Cobra should also possibly be considered the ultimate production car engine swap of all times? Perhaps a bit of a grandiose statement at first read, but let’s take a closer look at this car’s history and then you can be the judge yourself of that and also decide if it’s worth the claimed $20 million plus dollar estimate that has been placed as it’s value…

Garage Find: 1966 Ford GT40 Mk 1(P/1067)

This 1966 Ford GT40 (P/1067) was recently excavated from a garage in Thousand Oaks, California after being stored under accumulated garbage for 37 years. The story of it’s find recently hit the internet after notorious vintage Ferrari scout Tom Shaugnessy finally prevailed as it’s latest owner since being in bidding war over it for a year. It is always hard to believe when such a rare car is unearthed, as you would think that they are all accounted for, but somehow there are still barn and garage finds resurfacing today that were thought long lost. Ford Mustang Convertible Shelby Resto Mod From Norway

Other than the pictures attached of this Ford Mustang convertible Shelby resto-mod build by Pony Performance in Norway, we unfortunately don’t have any other information on this featured car. You don’t have to be a Mustang enthusiast to appreciate what is going on here though, with lots of custom fabrication including a side exiting exhaust, a hand made steel hood and independent rear suspension assembly. The shop’s site looks to have been down for a while other than the front page, but regardless of all of the dead ends I felt that we had to feature this car anyways. It’s that good. Sometimes pictures alone can tell a full story themselves. Judge for yourself….

1971 Ford Transit Supervan

Oh, okay now this is absolutely glorious. Not so sure this beast could get away with being labeled a “sleeper”, but nonetheless what we have here is a 1971 Ford Transit that is basically a GT40 wrapped in the body of a cargo van. It was built by Terry Drury Racing, who was no stranger to Ford GT40’s, having campaigned them in competition back in the days as a privateer. The “Supervan” had the chassis, along with independent suspension and brakes from the GT40, paired with a mid mounted 400 bhp Gurney Weslake V8 and 5 speed transmission. It first appeared at Brands Hatch on Easter of ’71 wearing typical Ford racing white paint and blue stripe livery and arched wheel flares to cover the wide rims. Restoration of First Avanti Ever Produced

This 1961 Avanti is the very first one ever made (#1001) and is now the subject of a much needed restoration. The whacky metallic flake green vehicle, still containing it’s original engine and seats, was donated along with another one to the LeMay Car Museum in 2001, both in very poor condition. It’s restoration back to it’s original glory started in 2011 and is currently well on it’s way to completion. Concept Cars From 1970

We tend not to pay too much attention to concept cars because if/when they make it into production we know that the resemblance to their original show car features will be vague, at best. Wheels end up sitting further inside the wheel wells, paint is not nearly as nice and interiors and trim are made out of cheaper materials once they hit production, if they ever actually do. Nevertheless, we took a few minutes out of our normal schedule to put together as many pictures of concept cars from 1970 as we could find in a reasonable amount of time and have shared them on the following page. 1968 Plymouth Hemi Road Runner Restoration

Hemmings.com recently profiled this ’68 Plymouth 426 Hemi Road Runner that was restored by Supercar Specialties in Portland, Michigan. It was an absolute mess when it showed up at the shop with rust everywhere and even cobwebs in the engine cylinders, but when it was finished it was sporting a 712 hp Ray Barton Racing built engine that was further tuned enabling it to turn the quarter in 10.92 at 126.92 mph. We dig the factory look of the finished restoration, which is now a show car but absolutely not a trailer queen by any stretch of the imagination. Andy Rooney’s 1966 Sunbeam Alpine Tiger Restoration

We are back with another restoration recommendation from Hemmings.com to take a look at, this time around a touching story about a 1966 Sunbeam Tiger that belonged to Andy Rooney from 60 Minutes. He had originally purchased it brand new and always thoroughly enjoyed driving while he was still amongst us, but unfortunately never got to see it’s restoration finished by Whitehall Auto Restorations in Massachusetts while he was still alive. Survivor: Unrestored 1969 Shelby Mustang GT500 with 8,531 Miles

The subject of today’s Survivor is an all original 1969 Shelby Mustang GT500 that is set to hit the auction block April 25th in Pennsylvania. It has only 8,531 miles on it from when it’s first owner, Larry A. Brown bought it new and it is said to have never even been washed since sitting at the dealership. This 428 Cobra Jet 4 speed car had remained in his Pennsylvania garage since sometime before it’s registration expired in January of 1973, until he unfortunately recently passed away. The kicker to this story is that before he decided to store it away over 40 years ago, he never drove it in the rain or even washed it out of fear of water sneaking it’s way into the car’s unmentionables and rusting it. The car psychic in us attributes his tin worm anxiety to probably be the culprit of some early English or Italian car ownership sometime in his past, which would be an appropriate explanation and an understandable cause of his concern. Whatever the reason why, we wouldn’t have had the will power to let it sit untouched for so many years ourselves, so come take a closer look at a true time capsule example of self restraint with this Black Jade garage find and check out how they looked when they left the factory back in 1969…

Survivor: 2,996 Mile 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

We felt that this 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe would be the perfect fit for today’s Survivor feature to accompany yesterday’s 8,500 mile all original ’69 Shelby Mustang GT500. Both American V8 cars have similar back stories of being tucked away after having been driven very few miles, preserving them in the same condition that they left the factory over 40 years prior. Once again, we have no idea how either of these two guys could possibly have been able to store them for so long without driving the snot out of them, but at the same time we are thankful for people like them who possess the self restraint that we apparently don’t come close to having ourselves.
