2002 Porsche 996 GT2 “RSR” by 911Design

This 2002 Porsche 996 GT2 “RSR” is the subject of an on-going, 4 year active project by 911Design in an effort to build one of the most extreme street/track 911 GT2’s, possibly of all time. The custom fabrication craftsmanship and attention to detail in the suspension, engine and brakes, and all of it’s associated hardware is just absolute art. No posing here. In it’s final iteration, the 3.8 Twin Turbo engine was dynoed at 843 rwhp at 1.1 bar while running 100 octane race fuel.

The Rod Tempero Replica ’64 Ferrari Series 2 GTO

The hot vintage car topic on the internet this week has no doubt been the ’64 Ferrari Series 2 GTO since Petrolicious.com released their video of an original one being flogged by none other than it’s original driver Phil Hill’s son Derek. Then another Rod Tempero Coach Builders-built ’64 replica popped up on e-Bay and was subsequently featured on Bringatrailer.com. Considering the current value of an original, it will be interesting to see where this one ends up selling at, but exactly how accurate to a real one is it? How about we take a closer look at the New Zealand custom coach builder on the following page to get a better understanding of how to answer that question…

1986 MG Metro 6R4 Restoration by Mäkelä Auto Tuning in Finland

What car nerd among us doesn’t thoroughly enjoy seeing a race car being built from the ground up, especially when it is from the golden era of Group B competition such as this 1986 MG Metro 6R4 (AD570091)? Mäkelä Auto Tuning in Finland is the shop that handled the honors, who you just might remember from our previous feature of their Ferrari 308 to Michelotto Group B specification build (found in “Related posts” on the next page) from back in September. The shop completes some absolutely astounding, jaw dropping to ground, tongue rolling out, eyes bulging out projects, which we are sure nobody here would argue with after seeing some of their work. So, while we try to compose ourselves, why don’t you watch the build of this obscure little MG unfold on the next page, which we hesitate to label “hot hatch” in fear of some brutal retaliation from it. This evil machine is far too serious for that nomenclature, check it out for yourself…

1972 Abarth Osella SE/21 Restoration

This 1972 Abarth Osella was the subject of a restoration by Robin Automotive in Sonoma, California back in 2000 and has since popped up for sale at Symbolic Motors in La Jolla. The first of only six confirmed to have been fully completed, it was originally used as Enzo Osella’s testing and development car and was also a “loaner” car, given to teams when their cars were out of service. We love the look of these mini Ferrari Can Am-esque racers, and this one’s 2 liter 4 cylinder engine was rebuilt and dyno tested at 244 horsepower at 7,900 rpm with 173 ft/lb or torque at 6,000 rpm when it was restored. Those aren’t exactly figures that you would want to be putting around town with but work as an absolute screamer on the track. Now this is what we’re talking about! 1971 Ford Transit Supervan

Oh, okay now this is absolutely glorious. Not so sure this beast could get away with being labeled a “sleeper”, but nonetheless what we have here is a 1971 Ford Transit that is basically a GT40 wrapped in the body of a cargo van. It was built by Terry Drury Racing, who was no stranger to Ford GT40’s, having campaigned them in competition back in the days as a privateer. The “Supervan” had the chassis, along with independent suspension and brakes from the GT40, paired with a mid mounted 400 bhp Gurney Weslake V8 and 5 speed transmission. It first appeared at Brands Hatch on Easter of ’71 wearing typical Ford racing white paint and blue stripe livery and arched wheel flares to cover the wide rims. Video Recommendation: Porsche 911 by Head of Design for Bugatti

In this short video, /DRIVEN takes a look at Achim Anscheidt’s 1981 Porsche SC. As the Head of Design for Bugatti, it is interesting to see his minimalist build, surely a sharp contrast to the luxurious power barges that consume his daily job duties. His 911 has been backdated to an early long hood car specification and was made extremely lightweight from use of Kevlar fenders, door skins and front and rear lids, as well as from gutting the interior, too. It’s beautifully simplistic yet effective build is exactly the kind that we like to feature here, and somehow we are sure that you’ll agree that this one was finished properly:

1968 Plymouth Hemi Road Runner Restoration

Hemmings.com recently profiled this ’68 Plymouth 426 Hemi Road Runner that was restored by Supercar Specialties in Portland, Michigan. It was an absolute mess when it showed up at the shop with rust everywhere and even cobwebs in the engine cylinders, but when it was finished it was sporting a 712 hp Ray Barton Racing built engine that was further tuned enabling it to turn the quarter in 10.92 at 126.92 mph. We dig the factory look of the finished restoration, which is now a show car but absolutely not a trailer queen by any stretch of the imagination. 2012 Volkswagen Scirocco R Modification

This 2012 Volkswagen Scirocco R is the subject of a 79 page modification thread on http://www.vwgolf.net.au/forum.php by it’s owner, forum member “Rev555”.  While we normally don’t feature slammed stance rides with flat wraps here, we have made the exception for this particular car because of it’s impressive list of modifications. Also because we have a soft spot for the “new” Scirocco that is unfortunately not being imported here into the United States, which makes it even more difficult after seeing these photos. In any case, when a car is as modified as this feature R, there are always decisions to personalize it to one’s own unique taste that not everybody will agree upon, but we can respect that when the overall end result is more about performance than appearance. With 513 ft lbs of torque, we have no problems at all here. Moving on…

Citroen Maserati SM Restoration

This Citroen Maserati SM is the subject of a ground up restoration by a collaboration between two shops in France: Classic-Car-Charolais for the body work, and Patrick Regembeau for the mechanical. Although they do not include any background narrative of this particular SM’s history on either of their sites, there are more than enough restoration pictures posted to piece together it’s rejuvenation story. We have also included pictures of one of the historic work shops where the transformation occurred because it fits so well as the perfectly appropriate setting for the renovation of this French and Italian mixed exotic. In the end, the car’s final results look absolutely stunning in it’s show quality finish.

Reader Submission: 1960 Austin Seven Mk 1 Mini Restoration/Yamaha Engine Swap

This 1960 Austin Seven Mk1 project is brought to us today by CarBuildIndex.com reader Joe, who wanted to share with fellow viewers his epic build that includes an engine and transmission swap from a 2003 Yamaha YZF-R1 motorcycle. The 11,000 rpm, 998 cc motor is said to produce in the range of 164 horsepower and weigh merely a scant 150 pounds. At 200 pounds less than the stock one it replaces and in excess of 30 more horsepower than a fully built 1275cc Series A engine, that’s a win/win formula which you will never find us arguing with. The project started almost 6 years ago and it is currently in it’s final stages of completion, so come take a closer look at it with us on the following page and then be sure not to miss his linked site that details his build in full.

UPDATED: BMW E30 M3 Race Car Restoration/Build

Update: Since our original November 6th post, this M3 build is almost finished and can be seen on the following page after the original feature starting below.

We ran across this BMW E30 M3 race car’s build featured on CrankAndPiston.com, linked at the bottom of the page. Appropriately titled “E30 M3 Perfection”, it is the undertaking of MSW Dubai’s Jon Simmonds, who’s goal was to restore it as a no expense spared project utilizing modern race technology. The quality of the build is nothing short of astounding. We have said it before and we will say it again…there is always just something about seeing a caged E30 M3 on jack stands in the corner of a shop that gets us all fired up, especially in white for whatever reason. Probably has something to do with the motorsports connection. And we always appreciate when the stock dashboard is kept in place in an otherwise stripped out interior. This one is already off to a good start…

1968 Fiat Dino Spider Restoration

This 1968 Fiat Dino Spider’s restoration project was posted in a thread on Fiat500USAForum.com by it’s owner, forum member “fredfrey”. The car was light blue when it originally left the factory 40 something years ago, but had been re painted resale red at some point by a previous owner. We are guessing that the Ferrari prancing horse emblem was slapped on the front grill at the same time, which is something that was never applied by either factory during their production run. A small quibble perhaps, considering otherwise discerning good taste is witnessed by both the light blue “Ferrari” Dino color that was chosen for it to be resprayed in and the fact that it has an awesome Alfa Romeo Jr. Zagato and a Fiat 600 both as stablemates. Sometimes, just seeing a garage with interesting cars gives their owner credibility to some of their personal choices that are made during another car’s restoration. Call us car snobs, but would we be second guessing his color choice and emblem decision if he had a PT Cruiser instead of a Zagato as one of his other cars? Probably.

Toyota Mk1 MR-2 Restoration

This Mark 1 Toyota MR-2 is the subject of a nut and bolt restoration thread on detailingworld.co.uk by it’s owner, forum member “Beeste”. Before anybody throws up their arms and starts questioning the sanity of this car’s owner for spending so much money on the rejuvenation of a car of such meager current economic value, it should be pointed out that Japanese cars are among the next crop of future vintage cars which are likely to see an appreciation in worth. Our information source, Hagerty Insurance, recently wrote an on-line article outlining the top 5 Japanese cars that they predict will become future collectibles. We have cut and pasted it at the bottom of this page, as it makes for an interesting and educational read. Although the MR-2 did not make their short list, we anticipate that they would have included one in their top 10, had that list been extended.

2011 Fiat 500 Abarth with Mid Engine and Rear Wheel Drive

This 2011 Fiat Abarth was taken and made into something that more closely resembles the original classic Abarth by moving it’s engine behind the seats and giving it rear wheel drive. Although this one has mid engine placement rather than rear, we would have to agree that it was a better choice than having it hang out over the rear axle like the classic version. It’s called the “Motore Centrale R230” (which we hopefully don’t have to translate for you) by the Italian aftermarket tuner Aznom, the “R230” representing what the little Fiat engine’s horsepower was tuned up to. With a custom cradle made to hold it, suspension by Bilstein and larger brakes by Tar-Ox, could this be the closest thing to an Renault R5 that we have seen since the Ford Shogun? We say take it one step further and give it flares, more horsepower and less weight, which sounds like something close to what they have planned for it with a possible track day version in the future.
