CSX2000: The Very First Shelby Cobra Ever Produced

This innocuous appearing blue AC set before you just so happens to be one of, if not the most significant sports cars in automotive history to ever grace an American powerplant. You see, this vehicle is CSX2000, the very first Shelby Cobra to ever be produced. But you already knew that there was something special about this car, didn’t you? Upon first glance at it’s photos, the automotive connoisseur in you already immediately noted it’s well earned patina, ruling out the possibility of it being a later produced replica, especially when you consider that the majority of replicas wear wider flared bodies. This one’s narrow body, early unfamiliar looking vintage badges and all original looking interior were all tell tale signs that this was possibly an exceptionally iconic car that you are looking at, but would you have known that this Cobra should also possibly be considered the ultimate production car engine swap of all times? 1968 Plymouth Hemi Road Runner Restoration

Hemmings.com recently profiled this ’68 Plymouth 426 Hemi Road Runner that was restored by Supercar Specialties in Portland, Michigan. It was an absolute mess when it showed up at the shop with rust everywhere and even cobwebs in the engine cylinders, but when it was finished it was sporting a 712 hp Ray Barton Racing built engine that was further tuned enabling it to turn the quarter in 10.92 at 126.92 mph. We dig the factory look of the finished restoration, which is now a show car but absolutely not a trailer queen by any stretch of the imagination. This 1960 Austin Seven Mk1 project is brought to us today by CarBuildIndex.com reader Joe, who wanted to share with fellow viewers his epic build that includes an engine and transmission swap from a 2003 Yamaha YZF-R1 motorcycle. The 11,000 rpm, 998 cc motor is said to produce in the range of 164 horsepower and weigh merely a scant 150 pounds. At 200 pounds less than the stock one it replaces and in excess of 30 more horsepower than a fully built 1275cc Series A engine, that’s a win/win formula which you will never find us arguing with. BMW 1M with M5 V10 Engine Swap

We haven’t featured a late model car receiving an engine swap recently, so when we came across this behemoth we thought that we would throw it in the mix. It’s a BMW 1M that has received a 5 liter V10 engine from a 2005-2010 model year M5 shoe horned into it along with it’s SMG gearbox, as well. Normally that would be good for 507 horsepower, but the madmen at TJ Fahrzeug Design in Germany who were responsible for the engine swap re-tuned it to closer to 555.

1973 Brumos Porsche 911 S Current Restoration/Build Thread

There’s a really interesting 1973 Porsche 911 S home garage build thread currently unfolding on PellicanParts.com, which can be found linked on the following page. For those of you who want to be caught up to date with the Cliff Notes version first, all you got to do is continue reading here for the highlights before jumping in. The project starts with a long hood which was originally built by Florida based championship race winning Brumos Porsche as their own iteration of a factory lightweight RS or Clubsport package car. It includes an actual genuine “retired” IROC 3.0 RSR engine that was first installed back in ’74, the crown jewel of this project. Since it is being rebuilt as a street car still, forum member/car owner “chriskimmelshue” is keeping it’s electric sunroof and windows, heat and carpet and is building it exactly to his spec, regardless of others are suggesting he does with the rare race engine or original Brumos history, and here’s how it is going down…

Volkswagen Golf Build for U.K. Time Attack Series

This Volkswagen MKVI Golf is the subject of a race car build thread on VWVortex.com by forum member “[email protected]”. The car started as a wrecked plain Jane base model Golf, but was given the full work over for Time Attack racing by Milltek Sport in the U.K., which included a warmed over 415 hp Golf R 4 cylinder turbo engine. There is no mention whether it received the R’s 4 Motion drive system too, so we are left to assume that it retains the base model’s front wheel drive platform, perhaps for weight savings or race class regulations. We have always been big fans of modified VW’s when they are tastefully and properly built like this car, which shouldn’t be confused with a drift car, not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course. Otherwise, the name of the series that this VW is racing in wouldn’t be called “Time Attack”, since going sideways isn’t exactly the quickest way around a track…

Factory Special 1985 VW Porsche Bus: The B32

Here’s an interesting vehicle that we never knew existed before, the 1985 VW Porsche B32. Porsche reportedly built up to possibly 15 of these rare 3.2 liter flat 6 cylinder vans, although we are finding conflicting reports which state that it could have been just 10 or 11 total. The concept for the original example was made when the factory wanted a support vehicle for use at the Paris to Dakar Rally when they were racing their 959 in some Group B action. Whatever the reason, we are just happy that this creation exists and can’t believe we have never heard of it before. We have seen VW Bus’s in an assortment of engine swap flavors, normally utilizing Subaru’s boxer engine as a cost effective power upgrade, but we like to keep it in the family and this example is kosher clean. Short Take: Datsun 240Z with Viper V10 Engine Swap

This unsuspecting classic Datsun 240Z was the recipient of an engine swap of all engine swaps, receiving a Viper V10. The low key sleeper looks extremely well built and we have been scouring the internet trying to find any information regarding this car’s build to go along with it’s pictures, but have come up short time and time again. Rather than keep it selfishly to ourselves any longer, we felt that it still had to be shared even without any solid details to go with it. 1968 Chevy Camaro Resto Mod with LS7 Engine

This 1968 Chevy Camaro resto-mod was built by the experts at Bodie Stroud Industries for actor/comedian Tim Allen. Normally, we aren’t exactly huge advocates of most resto-mod builds. Even the name by itself immediately conjures up mental images of huge chrome wheels and other SEMA-esque anachronisms made to poor, unsuspecting classic car victims, but we can forgive the damage that term has caused when the outcome is as tastefully built up as this car here. The intention of the project was to build a car that reminded Tim of the hot rods from his youth, although this time around as an updated modern day interpretation utilizing a 427 LS7 engine with upgraded suspension and brakes, too. Pontiac Solstice Build with 427 V8 Engine Swap

This Pontiac Solstice was the subject of a project build at Hot Rod Magazine. With the additional help of General Motors Performance Division, the two joined forces and utilized the 2 seater’s rear wheel drive platform as the basis for a 7.0 liter, 427 cubic inch V8 engine swap. Since neither take any assigned task haphazardly, naturally everything in the car was torn apart and rebuilt around the new crate engine using mostly all GM parts numbers, including suspension and brake upgrades to match it’s new found horsepower. 1977 Toyota Celica Resto/Mod Build + Video

This 1977 Toyota first-generation Celica was the subject of a resto mod by it’s owner, Brian Karasawa. Back in the early 70’s, he was one of the early pioneers in the Japanese car enthusiast’s scene who were amongst the first to have modified their foreign “econo-boxes”. There weren’t a lot of aftermarket parts options available for him and his Southern California Shoreline Racing club member friends to choose from at the time. They all owned rear wheel drive cars such as Mazda RX3’s, Datsun 510’s, Capri’s and Celicas, making their lightweight platforms perfect candidates for engine and suspension upgrades. As a youth, he did what he could on a limited budget to modify his first Celica by cutting the springs, installing some Hayashi 13X7 rims and also a louder exhaust system, which all together created the look he was going after, but didn’t exactly have the performance to back it up. Recently he decided that it was time again for him to build a car like he had always wanted in the past, but this time around built right without any of the budget limitations that he had in his youth and the results seen on the continuing page are epic. This 1965 Alfa Romeo Sprint GT feature is brought to us by CarBuildIndex.com reader, Phil Knudsen. He purchased this tastefully upgraded ’65 earlier this year with Alfaholics.com’s “Fast Road Suspension Kit”, their 14″ alloys, bigger brakes and hydraulic clutch. Regarding the engine, he tells us, “What lies beneath is a wonderful 2L conversion with high compression heads and bigger cams and Alfaholic’s exhaust. This one is for keeps.” We would have to agree.

BMW X5 with 700 hp LeMans Race Car Engine Swap

Back in 2000,  BMW picked an X5 right off of their South Carolina assembly line and sent it to their factory in Munich to do an engine swap of all engine swaps…installation of ’99 Le Mans 6.0 liter V12 race engine with 700 horsepower. While the story of this ludicrous SUV has made it’s way around the internet for quite a few years already, we felt an obligation to include it here since it epitomizes what the hobby of car builds is all about. Plus, listening to a Le Mans race engine being wrung out on a track by driving legend Hans Stuck never gets old, even if we don’t understand a word of the German he speaks. Jay Leno’s Mercedes Benz 300 SEL 6.3 with AMG Engine Swap

While doing a search for an interesting AMG engine swap to feature here, we came across this story that we actually remember reading about a few years back. It involved taking a brand spanking new 518 horsepower, 6.2 liter naturally aspirated V8 engine normally found in the late model E63 and S63 AMG series sedans and transplanting it into a vintage 300SEL 6.3. It apparently already had tallied up around 300,000 miles on it, which we thought we should mention just in case the period-correct police began to turn on their sirens…

1200 hp 1972 Chevy Nova: The Ultimate Sleeper Build

This 1972 Chevrolet Nova was the subject of a sleeper build by Kurt Urban at Wheel 2 Wheel Powertrains in Michigan for their customer, Dru Diesner. And when we say “sleeper build”, we should really have emphasized that with the much more descriptive word “ultimate” in front of it, because that is exactly what we have here. From looking at it as a casual glance, you would be hard pressed to have noticed anything to give away the fact that this bad boy is generating 1,160 horsepower at 7,500 rpm and 825 lb-ft of torque through use of a twin supercharged LS2. Everything in this build was custom fabricated with the goal of hiding every last bit of it’s true potential. Can you say “bad ass”? This thing just screams of anger management issues, which is exactly why we love it.
