Jay Leno’s Garage just completed the restoration of an amazing ’66 26R with many trick and custom fabricated parts, but we won’t spoil the surprise of what they are by letting them out of the bag beforehand. They filmed many stages of the build and wrapped it all up in the video below, and then followed it up with an epic drive. McLaren MP4-12C Under Construction

We always enjoy watching the process of car projects coming together and know that most die hard car enthusiast do too, therefore the whole reasoning behind the creation of this site. When we come across new exotic cars being built in a slow moving assembly line at their factories that are as clean as hospital surgery rooms, we always use the opportunity to feature them here to compare the contrasts and similarities of their builds to our other features of projects finished in everything from home garages to professional restoration shops. Autoblog.com recently had a news story about the new baby McLaren P13 that will be coming next year and had a few pictures of the existing MP4-12C under production, which we have included on the next page. The F1-67

While growing up as young and impressionable gear heads, many of us now prefer race cars from the time period when we were first exposed to them as children or young adults. Ian Gray at Stuart Taylor Motorsport in the U.K. has a specific era in racing history that motivated him to build race cars of his own, and that’s the time between 1967 and 1968 when Indy and Formula 1 cars had moved from front to mid engine placement and before the introduction of slicks or the “cluttered” look of wings attached for down force. Their car, which is called the “F1-67”, is a modern day interpretation of the 1967 Honda RA273 Formula 1 car, but it is built to be economical to run. Volkswagen Golf Build for U.K. Time Attack Series

This Volkswagen MKVI Golf is the subject of a race car build thread on VWVortex.com by forum member “[email protected]”. The car started as a wrecked plain Jane base model Golf, but was given the full work over for Time Attack racing by Milltek Sport in the U.K., which included a warmed over 415 hp Golf R 4 cylinder turbo engine. There is no mention whether it received the R’s 4 Motion drive system too, so we are left to assume that it retains the base model’s front wheel drive platform, perhaps for weight savings or race class regulations. We have always been big fans of modified VW’s when they are tastefully and properly built like this car, which shouldn’t be confused with a drift car, not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course. Otherwise, the name of the series that this VW is racing in wouldn’t be called “Time Attack”, since going sideways isn’t exactly the quickest way around a track…

Cut-A-Way Car Displays

Since we featured Shin Yoshikawa’s awe inspiring cut-a-way car drawings a few weeks ago (http://www.carbuildindex.com/22153/part-3-shin-yoshikawas-cutaway-drawing-and-book/), we thought that it might be interesting to take a look at actual, full scale cut-a-way cars. The use of cut-a-way car displays is a tradition that automobile manufacturers have been practicing for decades since the early days of auto shows. When we see them we always find it interesting to do a walk around and hope that some deeper understanding of automobile’s intricate mechanical workings will somehow be willed upon us while we blankly gaze at them trying to figure them out. Unfortunately that never seems to happen and then the best we can do is resort to imagining a good hand car washing rather than wrenching. 1951 Allard J2 Competition Restoration

Jaguar E Type-Based Eagle Low Drag GT

Eagle is a UK based Jaguar restoration shop that is equally as well known for their E Type rejuvenations as it is for their modern day interpretations. This E Type based Eagle Low Drag GT is the grand daddy epitome of all Jaguar E Types, a car that Enzo Ferrari himself once happened to have called the most beautiful car ever made. We wonder what he would say about this 2,280 pound 4.7 liter 346 horsepower version when compared to his current hefty, over sized and proportioned line up if he were still alive today. 1962 Triumph Italia 2000 Coupe Restoration

This 1962 Triumph Italia 2000 was the subject of a restoration by British Sports Cars in San Luis Obispo, California. The car was brought to the shop in mechanically sound condition running under it’s own power, although it’s physical condition at the time was not quite as fortunate. The rare car’s Italian body had been so poorly repaired from previous accident damage that a metal shop had to fabricate all new panels for it since none still exist for the model. In fact, even back when these Coupes were new purchasers were asked to sign a letter of acknowledgment stating they were aware and accepted that body parts were not stocked outside of Turin. That’s a fairly strong statement to make way back in 1962 before today’s overly litigious society where signing release of liability forms is now a common place practice. The clear message here was: “Buy at your own risk”…

Random Vintage Targa Floria Race Photos

In this feature we have plucked 130 random photos of the classic Targa Florio race from http://www.forum-auto.com/ ‘s 1,642 page thread. The open road rally-esque race was held on the public mountain roads of Sicily beginning in 1906. By 1977’s last race, it was declared “totally insane” by driver Helmut Marko because of the high speeds the race cars would achieve while ripping within inches of spectators standing on the streets without any protection between them. Throughout it’s history, miraculously only 9 people total were killed during the race, drivers included. But rather than focus on the morbid, how about we take a moment to celebrate the courageous drivers of the past from before the time of stringent safety concerns for them or their audience. And also marvel at the gorgeous war weapons that were brought out to duke it out with in the heat of battle for the overall championship title. Those were the days of guts and glory, a romantic period of time when cars were designed by artisans with vision rather than lawyers with restrictions. Aston Martin Factory Recalls Cars Built Between 2007-2014

Aston Martin just announced that they are currently recalling all of the 2008 to 2014 model year left hand drive cars they have built thus far to date, except for any Vanquish models. Factory service departments world wide should expect to be flooded for the factory mandated fix of an accelerator pedal that could break without warning. 2010 KTM X Bow Build

This 2010 KTM X Bow was the subject of a couple of modification threads by Backdraft Motorsports in the U.K. In our quest to scour the internet and find the most interesting build threads humanly possible to share with our CBI fan(s), we happened to have run across two web sites which had the same build. We figured that was a sign from a divine power greater than us, so we ran like hell with it. Also, we had recently featured a few other (non-USA) street legal race cars in the not too distant past, but as a side note we feel we have to be brutally honest here…between the KTM X Bow, the Ariel Atom, the Radical RXC and the BAC Mono, we have got to admit we are smitten by the BAC by far the most. That is probably because it is able to replicate the look of a formula car the closest since it is the only single seater between them, which perhaps says something about our selfish nature. Not that we care, of course. Whatever, moving on back on target.

Most Beautiful Race Car Of All Time?

David Malsher at http://www.racer.com/ recently asked his readers their own personal opinion of “the most beautiful race cars of all time”. The question is not limited to his own audience, so how about we join in, too? He requested that only 5 are picked at most, and the best replies will appear in an upcoming February follow up story with the chance at some prizes. The trick is that he asks that you try and be objective with your decisions and not choose only cars that have a winning competitive history that may have influenced your own personal reasons for picking them. Normally we are told not to judge a book by it’s cover, but in this case that is exactly what we are being asked to do here.

Steve McQueen’s Rides: A Photo Retrospective

Much has been written about Steve McQueen and the cars he has had throughout his lifetime, and rightfully so because the “King of Cool” actor had discriminating automobile taste and he was a noted accomplished driver, as well. He was a true car guy through and through, having owned some of the most sought after and interesting cars in automotive history before his untimely death in 1980. Motorcycles and cars that he has owned in the past have recently sold for between 3 to 10 times the average selling price of similar models in comparison, which is referred to as the “McQueen Effect”. There has only been one so far that has not held true to that formula, it being a Siata 208S which sold for market value because there was never any proof of it’s true lineage found that proved his name was ever on the title. Although there was never any documents to support the claim of that particular car, it is still a well known fact that he did own a 208S that he stuck Ferrari badges on and that he referred to as his “little Ferrari”, most probably because of it’s resemblance to the 166 and 212 Barchettas. Furthermore, although pictured, it has been noted that he was lent the Cobra in the photos by Carroll Shelby, although never purchased one for himself. Help a Man with Lymphoma Fund His Dream:1965 Lotus Elan Restoration

We ran across this story on http://jalopnik.com/ where 2 sons in Ann Arbor, Michigan are asking for donations to help them fund their father’s dream of finishing his 1965 Lotus Elan restoration. Robert Tischler is battling stage III Hodgkins Lymphoma and has become non responsive to his chemotherapy. He is a gearhead of the truest form, having started his Lotus restoration in the early 80’s but having to shelve it before completion because of work obligations and a new family. Without the means to do it themselves, the sons ask that he be given the opportunity to finish his dream with our help, with promises of video updates of the Lotus’s restoration work and progress along the way. The pledge ends in a few days on January 11th, and they have so far reached $3,297 out of the $5,000 needed for parts to start the project. The countdown is on, let’s pull together and do what we can to help.
