Vintage Shelby Factory Photos

June 28, 2017 in American / Engine Swap / English / Factory Tour / Race Car

If you’re here browsing this site, then chances are you’re a gear head of the highest magnitude and it wouldn’t be necessary to introduce who Carroll Shelby is, because that would be insulting and redundant. To each and everyone one of us. We understand. So, we’ll skip the formalities and leave you to drool over the following vintage period photos of his sport cars during different stages of production at his factory in Venice, which never seem to get old. Enjoy…

1958 Berkeley Gilmore SE492 Period Race Car Restoration

June 27, 2017 in English / Race Car / Restoration Shop / Video

This 1958 Berkeley Gilmore SE492 was the subject of a restoration by Pete’s Custom Coachbuilding in Ohio. You may remember the shop from our previous feature of their restoration of a beautiful eggshell white 1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce, linked at the bottom of the following page. While there is no information on their site about this particular Berkeley other than the photos attached, we located and embedded their YouTube video on the next page that gives the full low down of it’s history and restoration, but not before a brief history of the small car company for a little more insight to what they were all about…

Now this is the way a race car is supposed to be driven, and sound! Listen to the glorious noises that this 1971 Nissan Skyline GT-R’s S20 inline 6 emits as it gets wound out by Motoharu Kurosawa “Gan-San” at Fuji Speedway. Barn Find Porsche 917-024 “Le Mans” Movie Car Set for Auction

June 9, 2017 in Barn Find / German / Movie Car / Race Car / Restoration / Video

Today, on this otherwise redundant and mundane Monday morning, we have the intriguing story of the barn find, restoration and coming sale of Porsche 917-024, the actual vehicle used in the filming of the iconic car enthusiast’s cult classic race movie “Le Mans” with Steve McQueen. It is set to hit the auction block this August with Gooding & Company in Pebble Beach, and as we all know, anything with the “King of Cool’s” name attached to it adds a multiplying factor of many times it’s value to it’s final price. Expectations of this famous car’s sale are projected to hit in the neighborhood of an astounding, yet not surprising, $20 million. The accompanying barn find story of how it had dropped off the radar for 23 years…

1968 Ford Escort Restoration Video

June 7, 2017 in American / Barn Find / Build In Progress / Engine Swap / English / Home Garage Build / Race Car / Replica/Tribute Build / Restoration / Video

The following video on the next page chronicles the complete rebuild of a 1968 Ford Escort Mk 1 in the style of the vintage Rothmans cars, although it’s livery is hopefully intentionally misspelled as “Rotmanns”. Not only does the inspirational film show the car being taken from a basket case to a very capable vintage stage racer, it also shows some epic in-car action shots during several competitions from when it’s finished. Now, if this doesn’t entice you to work on your own car this 4th of July weekend, maybe it’s time to pick another project car that will motivate you more. Say, an Escort Mk 1, perhaps? (see what we did there?) Enjoy…

TheSmokingTire Video: Ferrari 348 Challenge 610 whp Twin Turbo

June 6, 2017 in Italian / Race Car / Restoration / Video

I apologize for the over abundance of videos lately, but this Ferrari 348 Twin Turbo video by TheSmokingTire was far too good to pass up posting here. This Italian started life out as a rare street legal 1 of 32 factory example with the Serie Challenge 348 package, and was transformed into a 610 whp animal that was tastefully built up with factory appearing modifications. Enough said, I will let the film do the rest of the talking. Enjoy it on the following page..

“Dirty Mo Acres”- Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s NASCAR Graveyard

May 30, 2017 in American / Art / Race Car / Uncategorized / Video

NASCAR driving legend Dale Earnhardt, Jr. has an interesting piece of property in North Carolina that not only houses his main residence, but also features an old wild west town, 3 oval race tracks for practice and best yet, between 40 and 50 crashed race cars strewn across it in vicarious positions, including hanging from trees. The cars come from his own personal past wreckages, and others too including his biggest contributor, Sonny Lunsford Keselowski. The good-‘ol-boy oasis is aptly named “Dirty Mo Acres”, and although it is not open to the public, it has been used in commercials and for private party events. Dale says he doesn’t plan to live there forever and hints that he may open it up for property tours before settling down to a more humble lifestyle sometime in the not too distant future. Until that day happens, be sure to enjoy the pictures of the carnage on the following page…

Caterham R400 Superlight Build

May 26, 2017 in English / Home Garage Build / Race Car

This Caterham R400 Superlight is the subject of an impressive home garage build thread on www.s2kca.com by forum member “Dr. Gonzo”. Caterham sells the modern day interpretation of the original Lotus 7 in kit form, where they begin by putting approximately 20 hours into the build before sending the rest out to assemble by owner, which is said to take between 60 to 70 hours on average. Looking at this build thread, everything, and we mean everything has to be put together, it’s quite extensive. Next time we see one of these on the street we will know a little more about exactly what was put into it. Come take a look with us on the following page, and be sure to check it out in detail in the link provided on the following page…

Lotus Type 79/1 Restoration

May 23, 2017 in English / Race Car / Restoration / Restoration Shop

This Lotus Type 79/1 Formula 1 vintage race car was the subject of a restoration by Classic Team Lotus in the U.K. The vehicle was originally used as a prototype for the development of under car aerodynamics with help from none other than Mario Andretti, and was also the first Formula 1 car designed using wind tunnel and computer design aids. Later, it was used as his spare race car for the 1978 season. When Lotus enthusiast Paul Rego of Regogo Racing in Texas found out that it was available for sale back in 2010, he took advantage of the opportunity to purchase the rare 1 of 5 car and promptly had it sent back to England where it received it’s renovation under the supervision of Clive Chapman, son of Lotus “add lightness” legend Colin.

Mind Blowing F40 LM Short Video

May 22, 2017 in Italian / Race Car / Video

The following video is perhaps one of the top YouTube videos I have personally ever witnessed, regardless of it’s grainy poor quality. Somehow, I am sure that you’ll overlook it’s low definition too the second you hear the audio bliss of this 720 bhp Ferrari F40 LM being wrung out by ex Formula 1 driver Jacques Lafitte at circuit du Mas du Clos. I especially enjoyed the fact that the monsieur is rocking it in his street clothes and no helmet, the following day after Christmas no less back in ’92. How do we get Santa to grant that same wish for us this year? In any case, be sure not to miss our previous features that include an F40 LM undergoing a full restoration HERE and the Japanese F40 promotional video HERE after. Behold:

2010 Nissan Skyline GT-R SCCA World Challenge GT Race Car Build

May 16, 2017 in Japanese / Modification Thread / Race Car

This Nissan GT-R was the subject of an SCCA World Challenge GT race car build thread on www.GTR.co.uk, by forum member “[email protected]”. In order to get a baseline before tearing the car apart, AMS Performance in Chicago began by weighing the brand new, 74 mile car. While not exactly a featherweight at a hefty 3,908 pounds, all of it’s luxo grand touring stock interior pieces were chucked out next in favor of gutting it’s interior and installing some serious competition hardware. Every bit of necessary engine, brake and suspension modifications were applied to help it to endure the rigors of fender to fender racing, and give it a fighting chance to win some too, of course. Now, time for us to do what we do by covering the dismantling and build process on the following page. Please join us, and bring a jack to help lift our jaws off the ground, won’t you?

EVO Video: Lancia Delta Integrale Evo II

May 15, 2017 in Homologation / Italian / Race Car / Video

In the video on the following page, the head of EVO magazine, Harry Metcalfe, talks about his gorgeous “Giallo Ginestra” (the Italian language itself is just as beautiful as their art, design, food, landscape, automobiles and culture, isn’t it?) yellow Lancia Delta Integrale Evo II while covering the model’s glorious racing history, as well. This one’s not to be missed, but if you still find yourself jonesing for more Delta Integrale content after this video, then be sure not to miss our previous features of an ’88 Project Build here, an ’86 Restoration here, and an all out ’92 “La Supra” Delta Evo 1 Build here. Survivor: 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona NASCAR

May 1, 2017 in American / Patina / Race Car / Survivor

The subject of today’s Survivor feature is this slick red 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona, which is said to have been the first NASCAR Grand National vehicle to post a 200 + mph race lap. It has remained in incredibly original condition, all of the way down to it still wearing the same vintage slick tires that it had last worn while competing for it’s final time. Now coated with a silicon sealant on their insides, they are certainly period correct for show purposes, but obviously not a safe or sticky tire any longer for any manner of spirited driving, whatsoever. What really impressed me the most about this vintage racer is the fact that it was “not restored, but thoroughly cleaned, detailed and all mechanical components checked. It is just as it was last raced in 1970”, as per Bruce Canepa’s site where it is listed for an undisclosed sum. A true time capsule. Let’s take a closer look, shall we?…

CSX2000: The Very First Shelby Cobra Ever Produced

April 28, 2017 in American / Engine Swap / English / Factory Photos / Patina / prototype / Race Car / Survivor

This innocuous appearing blue AC set before you just so happens to be one of, if not the most significant sports cars in automotive history to ever grace an American powerplant. You see, this vehicle is CSX2000, the very first Shelby Cobra to ever be produced. But you already knew that there was something special about this car, didn’t you? Upon first glance at it’s photos, the automotive connoisseur in you already immediately noted it’s well earned patina, ruling out the possibility of it being a later produced replica, especially when you consider that the majority of replicas wear wider flared bodies. This one’s narrow body, early unfamiliar looking vintage badges and all original looking interior were all tell tale signs that this was possibly an exceptionally iconic car that you are looking at, but would you have known that this Cobra should also possibly be considered the ultimate production car engine swap of all times? Perhaps a bit of a grandiose statement at first read, but let’s take a closer look at this car’s history and then you can be the judge yourself of that and also decide if it’s worth the claimed $20 million plus dollar estimate that has been placed as it’s value…
