As a follow up to yesterday’s New Zealand Lancia video, we just had to find the in-car footage that they showed of the legendary rear wheel drive 037 being put through it’s paces during a vintage tarmac rally. We took it upon ourselves to locate that clip, which low and behold can be found in the following /Chris Harris on Cars video below titled “Rally Heaven-Shotgun in a Lancia Stratos and Delta S4“. The whole video is epic and worth watching, but that particular segment starts at the 11 minute mark. Enjoy the glorious film below and be sure to turn up the volume on your speakers:

1972 Abarth Osella SE/21 Restoration

This 1972 Abarth Osella was the subject of a restoration by Robin Automotive in Sonoma, California back in 2000 and has since popped up for sale at Symbolic Motors in La Jolla. The first of only six confirmed to have been fully completed, it was originally used as Enzo Osella’s testing and development car and was also a “loaner” car, given to teams when their cars were out of service. We love the look of these mini Ferrari Can Am-esque racers, and this one’s 2 liter 4 cylinder engine was rebuilt and dyno tested at 244 horsepower at 7,900 rpm with 173 ft/lb or torque at 6,000 rpm when it was restored. Those aren’t exactly figures that you would want to be putting around town with but work as an absolute screamer on the track. Now this is what we’re talking about! Survivor: 1954 Aston Martin DB2/4 Bertone Competition Spider

The subject of today’s Survivor is this 1954 Arnolt Aston Martin DB2/4 Competition Spider with a body hand built by Bertone. It is one of only 3 designed by Scaglione, and remains in unrestored original condition with less than 15,000 miles. When we ran across it’s 2008 RM and 2009 Gooding & Company auction listings, we knew we had found the perfect vehicle for this weekend’s Sunday feature. While we mainly concentrate on restorations and projects during the week, we especially appreciate true survivors such as this that still wears it’s original hammer marks and spot welds on it’s hand formed body 60 years later, even more remarkable and unheard of considering it was a race car…

1968 Plymouth Hemi Road Runner Restoration

Hemmings.com recently profiled this ’68 Plymouth 426 Hemi Road Runner that was restored by Supercar Specialties in Portland, Michigan. It was an absolute mess when it showed up at the shop with rust everywhere and even cobwebs in the engine cylinders, but when it was finished it was sporting a 712 hp Ray Barton Racing built engine that was further tuned enabling it to turn the quarter in 10.92 at 126.92 mph. We dig the factory look of the finished restoration, which is now a show car but absolutely not a trailer queen by any stretch of the imagination. Survivor: 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS Lightweight

This 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS Lightweight was the subject of a sympathetic restoration by the Porsche marque experts at Autofarm in the U.K. What came to be known as the “Beirut RS”, we cannot fathom a truer poster child automobile that defines the term “survivor” better than this. During the war in Lebanon in the mid 80’s, a mortar shell hit the building that this rare car was being stored in and part of the structure fell on top of the car. The car was entombed until it was more recently resurrected by property developers who contacted the original owner’s family asking what they wanted to do with it…

Video Recommendation: The Secret Storage Facility of Audi Sport

Since our feature of Porsche Museum’s secret storage facility exactly 2 months ago today (http://www.carbuildindex.com/20165/porsches-secret-museum/), we thought that it would only be appropriate to follow that up with /DRIVE’S inside look at Audi Tradition in south eastern Germany. There, they store all of their historic race cars from every era they have raced in, including the iconic original Silver Arrows. We particularly enjoyed their in-car footage while ripping in a rally Quattro Coupe, and their look at the Trans Am series 200’s and 90 GTO cars, a few examples of the original competition cars that first bonded our interest in the marque that remains piqued to this day…

1984 Porsche Rothmans Prodrive 911 SCRS Restoration

Today’s Friday feature is the restoration of an authentic 1984 Porsche 911 SCRS which was originally built by Prodrive for racing in period with title sponsor Rothmans. This car is the real deal, 1 of only 20 cars built by the factory before being sent to the master gurus of Suburu WRC rally fame back in the day. It had been successfully campaigned in the Middle East in Group B competition before it’s latest owner here in the United States took custody of it. He had it’s engine rebuilt and had modifications given to it by Pat Williams Racing in 2005 so that he could street drive it when not participating in rally events here on our own home soil. Exactly our type of guy. More recently, Vintage Sports Cars Restorations gave it a full nut and bolt restoration, which is what you are about to witness on the following page. Behold…

1951 Bandini Siluro Motto Crosley Mercury 750cc Devin Monza‏ Barn Find

This 1951 Bandini Siluro Motto Crosley Mercury 750cc Devin Monza has a compelling, storied history to explain it’s ridiculously long and complicated name. Let’s take a crack at it and see if we can sort this out…
What started out as a cycle-fendered Bandini race car was ultimately transformed into this Devin Monza-bodied car for the 1958 racing season when an SCCA rules change dictated that they no longer allowed cars with cycle fenders to compete. It went on to race successfully for many more seasons before it was put away in storage for over 50 years, until it was finally exhumed out of it’s original owner’s garage in 2007. The term “barn find” is incorrectly over-used far too often these days, but if there were any car to qualify it would certainly be this one.

1991 Mazda 787B Restoration

This 1991 Mazda 787B was the overall winner of LeMans that year, and was treated to a restoration by Mazda in 2011 to celebrate it’s 20 year anniversary of that victory. Mazda is the only Japanese manufacturer to have ever won the race, and this vehicle is the only car powered by a rotor engine to have won LeMans, too. Check out it’s short restoration video on the following page, and an on-board demonstration lap at LeMans with Johnny Herbert at the wheel. Great stuff:

Video: Senna’s 91 McLaren Honda V12 Fired Up For First Time in 20 Years

In this video, legendary late Formula 1 driver Aryton Senna’s 1991 McLaren Honda MP4/6 3.5 liter V12 was recently fired up for the first time in 20 years. He used the land bound missile to win 7 races in 1991, therefore clinching the World Championship that year. Is it just us, or would you also agree that Senna represented the tale end of the golden era of F1? Before you make your own conclusion, listen to this engine while looking at the design of the chiseled vintage race car’s body and chassis, then compare it to today’s phallic nose F1 cars cluttered with billboard advertisements and overly complicated technology. Is there really any comparison? For us, quicker is not necessarily always better…

1988 Pro Car Alfa Romeo 164

Here’s a car that’s absolutely ludicrous (in a fantastic way) that we never knew existed until we recently ran across it on Jalopnick.com: the 1988 Pro Car Alfa Romeo 164 with mid mounted 3.5 liter V10 Formula 1 engine. Only two were ever built to participate in the Pro Car race series to support F1 Gran Prix races before plans for the series were cancelled because of high development costs. That’s too bad, because we would like to have seen what manufacturers came up with in the 80’s for race cars which used F1 technology but resembled street cars. Sleeper cars is our favorite subject, after all. They had chassis made by Brabham, and a full 620 hp at 13,300 rpm to propel just 1,623 pounds, which is just rubbing more salt into our open wounds. 1973 Brumos Porsche 911 S Current Restoration/Build Thread

There’s a really interesting 1973 Porsche 911 S home garage build thread currently unfolding on PellicanParts.com, which can be found linked on the following page. For those of you who want to be caught up to date with the Cliff Notes version first, all you got to do is continue reading here for the highlights before jumping in. The project starts with a long hood which was originally built by Florida based championship race winning Brumos Porsche as their own iteration of a factory lightweight RS or Clubsport package car. It includes an actual genuine “retired” IROC 3.0 RSR engine that was first installed back in ’74, the crown jewel of this project. Since it is being rebuilt as a street car still, forum member/car owner “chriskimmelshue” is keeping it’s electric sunroof and windows, heat and carpet and is building it exactly to his spec, regardless of others are suggesting he does with the rare race engine or original Brumos history, and here’s how it is going down…

While growing up as young and impressionable gear heads, many of us now prefer race cars from the time period when we were first exposed to them as children or young adults. Ian Gray at Stuart Taylor Motorsport in the U.K. has a specific era in racing history that motivated him to build race cars of his own, and that’s the time between 1967 and 1968 when Indy and Formula 1 cars had moved from front to mid engine placement and before the introduction of slicks or the “cluttered” look of wings attached for down force. Their car, which is called the “F1-67”, is a modern day interpretation of the 1967 Honda RA273 Formula 1 car, but it is built to be economical to run.
