Lotus Type 79/1 Restoration

This Lotus Type 79/1 Formula 1 vintage race car was the subject of a restoration by Classic Team Lotus in the U.K. The vehicle was originally used as a prototype for the development of under car aerodynamics with help from none other than Mario Andretti, and was also the first Formula 1 car designed using wind tunnel and computer design aids. Later, it was used as his spare race car for the 1978 season. When Lotus enthusiast Paul Rego of Regogo Racing in Texas found out that it was available for sale back in 2010, he took advantage of the opportunity to purchase the rare 1 of 5 car and promptly had it sent back to England where it received it’s renovation under the supervision of Clive Chapman, son of Lotus “add lightness” legend Colin.

Mind Blowing F40 LM Short Video

The following video is perhaps one of the top YouTube videos I have personally ever witnessed, regardless of it’s grainy poor quality. Somehow, I am sure that you’ll overlook it’s low definition too the second you hear the audio bliss of this 720 bhp Ferrari F40 LM being wrung out by ex Formula 1 driver Jacques Lafitte at circuit du Mas du Clos. I especially enjoyed the fact that the monsieur is rocking it in his street clothes and no helmet, the following day after Christmas no less back in ’92. How do we get Santa to grant that same wish for us this year? 2010 Nissan Skyline GT-R SCCA World Challenge GT Race Car Build

This Nissan GT-R was the subject of an SCCA World Challenge GT race car build thread on www.GTR.co.uk, by forum member “[email protected]”. In order to get a baseline before tearing the car apart, AMS Performance in Chicago began by weighing the brand new, 74 mile car. While not exactly a featherweight at a hefty 3,908 pounds, all of it’s luxo grand touring stock interior pieces were chucked out next in favor of gutting it’s interior and installing some serious competition hardware. Every bit of necessary engine, brake and suspension modifications were applied to help it to endure the rigors of fender to fender racing, and give it a fighting chance to win some too, of course. Now, time for us to do what we do by covering the dismantling and build process on the following page. Please join us, and bring a jack to help lift our jaws off the ground, won’t you?

Survivor: 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona NASCAR

The subject of today’s Survivor feature is this slick red 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona, which is said to have been the first NASCAR Grand National vehicle to post a 200 + mph race lap. It has remained in incredibly original condition, all of the way down to it still wearing the same vintage slick tires that it had last worn while competing for it’s final time. Now coated with a silicon sealant on their insides, they are certainly period correct for show purposes, but obviously not a safe or sticky tire any longer for any manner of spirited driving, whatsoever. What really impressed me the most about this vintage racer is the fact that it was “not restored, but thoroughly cleaned, detailed and all mechanical components checked. It is just as it was last raced in 1970”, as per Bruce Canepa’s site where it is listed for an undisclosed sum. A true time capsule. Let’s take a closer look, shall we?…

CSX2000: The Very First Shelby Cobra Ever Produced

This innocuous appearing blue AC set before you just so happens to be one of, if not the most significant sports cars in automotive history to ever grace an American powerplant. You see, this vehicle is CSX2000, the very first Shelby Cobra to ever be produced. But you already knew that there was something special about this car, didn’t you? Upon first glance at it’s photos, the automotive connoisseur in you already immediately noted it’s well earned patina, ruling out the possibility of it being a later produced replica, especially when you consider that the majority of replicas wear wider flared bodies. This one’s narrow body, early unfamiliar looking vintage badges and all original looking interior were all tell tale signs that this was possibly an exceptionally iconic car that you are looking at, but would you have known that this Cobra should also possibly be considered the ultimate production car engine swap of all times? Perhaps a bit of a grandiose statement at first read, but let’s take a closer look at this car’s history and then you can be the judge yourself of that and also decide if it’s worth the claimed $20 million plus dollar estimate that has been placed as it’s value…

This 1971 Ford Capri Perana Gunston Replica was the 8 year project of a South African man who set out to create an exact tribute to the original “A2” race car built by Basil Green. The South African Ford dealer originally made approximately 560 road cars and 6 race cars powered by Mustang 302 V8 engine swaps, which were the only modified cars other than Carroll Shelby’s that were authorized by Ford Motor Company to be sold at their dealerships while offering full factory warranties. Known as the “GT40 killers”, it’s no wonder that the owner of this vehicle chose a Perana to be the subject of his replica build. Until you actually hear it, you could almost get away with calling it a sleeper…

Lancia LC2 Group C Car

Lancia rally and race cars from the 70’s and 80’s remain to be the stuff of automotive legend, and when it comes to Group C cars nobody will argue that the LC2 with Martini sponsored livery is amongst the most memorable. Co-developed with Ferrari, the all Italian racer is powered by what is essentially a 308 engine with twin turbos attached to it, giving it an astounding 750 hp to enable it to compete against their German rivals at Porsche who were fielding 956’s, then later 962’s. Unfortunately, even though they didn’t prove to as reliable as they were gorgeous, they were still able to manage a few wins for the manufacturer between 1983 and 1986. Lancia therefore terminated any further attempts at Group C in 1986 to concentrate their efforts on rallying with the Delta Integrale, which turned out to be one of the most successful rally cars in history. Garage Find: 1966 Ford GT40 Mk 1(P/1067)

This 1966 Ford GT40 (P/1067) was recently excavated from a garage in Thousand Oaks, California after being stored under accumulated garbage for 37 years. The story of it’s find recently hit the internet after notorious vintage Ferrari scout Tom Shaugnessy finally prevailed as it’s latest owner since being in bidding war over it for a year. It is always hard to believe when such a rare car is unearthed, as you would think that they are all accounted for, but somehow there are still barn and garage finds resurfacing today that were thought long lost. Restoration of 1963 Jaguar E-Type Lightweight with Low Drag Body

Jaguar announced just yesterday that they will be building 6 brand new 1963 Lightweight E-Type “exact reproductions” utilizing unused chassis numbers that had been laying dormant at the factory (link) for the past 51 years. Therefore, when better than now to feature the mesmerizing restoration story of 1 of those original 12 that was horrifically crashed on track back in 1964 and thought unrepairable but then resurrected some 50 years later? The U.K. based Jaguar marque experts at Classic Motor Cars were the brave souls who took on that very challenge, and as a consolation prize they rolled away with a pair of twins…

1986 MG Metro 6R4 Restoration by Mäkelä Auto Tuning in Finland

What car nerd among us doesn’t thoroughly enjoy seeing a race car being built from the ground up, especially when it is from the golden era of Group B competition such as this 1986 MG Metro 6R4 (AD570091)? Mäkelä Auto Tuning in Finland is the shop that handled the honors, who you just might remember from our previous feature of their Ferrari 308 to Michelotto Group B specification build (found in “Related posts” on the next page) from back in September. The shop completes some absolutely astounding, jaw dropping to ground, tongue rolling out, eyes bulging out projects, which we are sure nobody here would argue with after seeing some of their work. So, while we try to compose ourselves, why don’t you watch the build of this obscure little MG unfold on the next page, which we hesitate to label “hot hatch” in fear of some brutal retaliation from it. This evil machine is far too serious for that nomenclature, check it out for yourself…

As a follow up to yesterday’s New Zealand Lancia video, we just had to find the in-car footage that they showed of the legendary rear wheel drive 037 being put through it’s paces during a vintage tarmac rally. We took it upon ourselves to locate that clip, which low and behold can be found in the following /Chris Harris on Cars video below titled “Rally Heaven-Shotgun in a Lancia Stratos and Delta S4“. The whole video is epic and worth watching, but that particular segment starts at the 11 minute mark. Enjoy the glorious film below and be sure to turn up the volume on your speakers:

1972 Abarth Osella SE/21 Restoration

This 1972 Abarth Osella was the subject of a restoration by Robin Automotive in Sonoma, California back in 2000 and has since popped up for sale at Symbolic Motors in La Jolla. The first of only six confirmed to have been fully completed, it was originally used as Enzo Osella’s testing and development car and was also a “loaner” car, given to teams when their cars were out of service. We love the look of these mini Ferrari Can Am-esque racers, and this one’s 2 liter 4 cylinder engine was rebuilt and dyno tested at 244 horsepower at 7,900 rpm with 173 ft/lb or torque at 6,000 rpm when it was restored. Those aren’t exactly figures that you would want to be putting around town with but work as an absolute screamer on the track. Now this is what we’re talking about! Survivor: 1954 Aston Martin DB2/4 Bertone Competition Spider

The subject of today’s Survivor is this 1954 Arnolt Aston Martin DB2/4 Competition Spider with a body hand built by Bertone. It is one of only 3 designed by Scaglione, and remains in unrestored original condition with less than 15,000 miles. When we ran across it’s 2008 RM and 2009 Gooding & Company auction listings, we knew we had found the perfect vehicle for this weekend’s Sunday feature. While we mainly concentrate on restorations and projects during the week, we especially appreciate true survivors such as this that still wears it’s original hammer marks and spot welds on it’s hand formed body 60 years later, even more remarkable and unheard of considering it was a race car…
