This 1955 Mercedes Benz 300 SL Gullwing was the subject of a full restoration by Rare Drive in East Kingston, New Hampshire. Although 300 SL’s are their specialty, they have also won awards on the lawns of Pebble Beach and Amelia Island for their restorations of Ferraris, Ford GT40s and Shelby Cobras too. Their website does not include any details of this specific vehicle, but since the car is such a classic we have included it here along with a bit of history on the model. By the time this road-going 300 SL was produced 3 years after the previously mentioned ’52, they had proved to be a force to be reckoned with at the track and on the showroom floors, and this particular example finally received a much needed restoration to bring it back to it’s former glory.
We are back with another restoration recommendation from Hemmings.com to take a look at, this time around a touching story about a 1966 Sunbeam Tiger that belonged to Andy Rooney from 60 Minutes. He had originally purchased it brand new and always thoroughly enjoyed driving while he was still amongst us, but unfortunately never got to see it’s restoration finished by Whitehall Auto Restorations in Massachusetts while he was still alive. His daughter Emily shares the story, which can be found in full in the link provided on the following page. But first, how about some pictures?
This Citroen Maserati SM is the subject of a ground up restoration by a collaboration between two shops in France: Classic-Car-Charolais for the body work, and Patrick Regembeau for the mechanical. Although they do not include any background narrative of this particular SM’s history on either of their sites, there are more than enough restoration pictures posted to piece together it’s rejuvenation story. We have also included pictures of one of the historic work shops where the transformation occurred because it fits so well as the perfectly appropriate setting for the renovation of this French and Italian mixed exotic. In the end, the car’s final results look absolutely stunning in it’s show quality finish.
This 1977 Lotus Esprit S1 has underwent a full nut and bolt restoration by it’s owner, who chronicled the whole process on a website that he dedicated to the 4 year build. His goal was to bring this Esprit S1 back to the way it had left the factory over 30 years ago. The end result exceeds these expectations, a car that certainly would have made Colin Chapman himself proud.
The Lotus had only 18,000 original miles on the clock when he purchased it back in 2009, and he began dismantling it before ever even driving it.
Now thiss is what we’re talking about! Jay Leno’s Garage just completed the restoration of an amazing ’66 26R with many trick and custom fabricated parts, but we won’t spoil the surprise of what they are by letting them out of the bag beforehand. They filmed many stages of the build and wrapped it all up in the video below, and then followed it up with an epic drive. In our (not so) humble opinion, definitely one of, if not The finest Elan existing today. Enjoy:
This Mark 1 Toyota MR-2 is the subject of a nut and bolt restoration thread on detailingworld.co.uk by it’s owner, forum member “Beeste”. Before anybody throws up their arms and starts questioning the sanity of this car’s owner for spending so much money on the rejuvenation of a car of such meager current economic value, it should be pointed out that Japanese cars are among the next crop of future vintage cars which are likely to see an appreciation in worth. Our information source, Hagerty Insurance, recently wrote an on-line article outlining the top 5 Japanese cars that they predict will become future collectibles. We have cut and pasted it at the bottom of this page, as it makes for an interesting and educational read. Although the MR-2 did not make their short list, we anticipate that they would have included one in their top 10, had that list been extended.

We always find it fascinating to see what is currently going on in Bruce Canepa‘s Scott’s Valley, California shop during their weekly video walk throughs. No sound is necessary, the images speak volumes. We have had our eye on the black Interscope 934 in particular, but wonder what the lowered Duesenberg with stock wheels all about, too. Is it too soon for yet another American muscle car restoration feature from Wing’s Auto Art? We didn’t think so either. What we got here this time around is this 1969 Pontiac GTO Ram Air IV Judge Convertible which was restored by the shop for repeat customer, John Kryta. This isn’t John’s first dance with Wing’s, as it appears that he already knew that this is the shop to take your vintage American iron to if you are looking for a top shelf restoration that will win trophies. This time he brought in the rarest (omitting color options) of the ’69 GTO’s, the Ram Air IV Judge Convertible…
This unsuspecting classic Datsun 240Z was the recipient of an engine swap of all engine swaps, receiving a Viper V10. The low key sleeper looks extremely well built and we have been scouring the internet trying to find any information regarding this car’s build to go along with it’s pictures, but have come up short time and time again. Rather than keep it selfishly to ourselves any longer, we felt that it still had to be shared even without any solid details to go with it. If/when a build thread can be found, we will update it here at that time. Until then, find what pictures we do have on the following page.
This 1962 Triumph Italia 2000 was the subject of a restoration by British Sports Cars in San Luis Obispo, California. The car was brought to the shop in mechanically sound condition running under it’s own power, although it’s physical condition at the time was not quite as fortunate. The rare car’s Italian body had been so poorly repaired from previous accident damage that a metal shop had to fabricate all new panels for it since none still exist for the model. In fact, even back when these Coupes were new purchasers were asked to sign a letter of acknowledgment stating they were aware and accepted that body parts were not stocked outside of Turin. That’s a fairly strong statement to make way back in 1962 before today’s overly litigious society where signing release of liability forms is now a common place practice. The clear message here was: “Buy at your own risk”…
Since featuring the notorious classic photograph of a crashed Ferrari Boxer down the side of a snowy embankment a few weeks ago from the back page of a 1983 issue of Road & Track, we have been on a quest to find a worthy 512 BB restoration to feature here. It turns out that Ferrari marque experts Foskers in the U.K. took on such a project starting with the purchase of one in 2008, although no model year of their car is given. Using our knowledge accrued from years of studying the pages of our car magazine subscriptions instead of doing homework at an early age, we would have to say that this example is probably a late ’70’s or an ’80. Whatever it’s actual model year, what we have here is a Ferrari BB Boxer being slowly and methodically taken apart and then exposed in all of it’s glory, only to be put back together to better than new, absolutely stunning show condition by experienced professionals. We tend to jump around a bit here, from Alfa Romeos to Mack truck restorations and everything in between, because we like to keep things interesting. We understand that the consummate car guy or gal is an automotive aficionado who can appreciate a wide variety of 4 wheel (or more) content. Since featuring the Porsche Boxster racer a few stories back, we figured that it would be the perfect time to include this 1955 550 RS Spyder restoration too since these were the original inspiration behind the whole factory type-986 project, after all…
